Beyond Banyuwangi

Want to add Tumpak Sewu (Indonesia's most spectacular waterfall, 120m curtain)? Here are honest ways to do it from your Banyuwangi base.

Option 1: Drive from Banyuwangi

Most flexible

Extend Route B with a dedicated Tumpak Sewu day. The drive is ~5 hours each way on good roads.

  • • Banyuwangi ↔ Tumpak Sewu: ~5h each way (~300 km, via Situbondo → Probolinggo → Lumajang)
  • • Requires 2 extra nights (Day 4: drive there + overnight; Day 5: explore + drive back)
  • • Total trip becomes 5D4N or 6D5N
Verdict: Most flexible, but you're adding 10+ hours of driving. Only worth it if Tumpak Sewu is bucket-list.

Option 2: Drop car, take train

Same time, less hassle

Leave your car parked at the hotel. Train + taxi/ojek to Tumpak Sewu.

Route:

  1. Train Banyuwangi Kota → Klakah: ~3h 30m — Economy IDR 62K or IDR 240K (Ijen Ekspres)
  2. Ojek/taxi Klakah station → Pronojiwo / Tumpak Sewu: ~1.5-2h — Rp 150-250K

Total one-way: ~5.5-6 hours

Verdict: NOT faster than driving. But you can sleep/read. Round-trip in one day is impossible — stay overnight in Lumajang or Malang.

Option 3: Fly to Malang, full East Java circuit

Best logistics

Skip Banyuwangi as base. Start from Malang: Malang → Tumpak Sewu (1.5h) → Bromo (2h) → Ijen (6h) → Ferry to Bali.

  • • Tumpak Sewu is near Malang — only 1.5-2h drive
  • • Bromo is 2h from Malang. Ijen is 6h from Bromo
  • • Standard backpacker route. More commercialized but efficient
Verdict: If Tumpak Sewu is the priority, start from Malang. Consider as a separate trip.

Option 4: Open trip from Banyuwangi

Easiest, least flexible

Take train from Banyuwangi to Malang. Join a daily open trip (shared group tour) to Tumpak Sewu.

  • • Train Banyuwangi → Malang: ~6 hours, IDR 200-400K
  • • Open trip: ~IDR 700K/person (includes transport, guide, entry)
  • • Total per person: ~IDR 900K-1.1M
Verdict: Good fallback if you don't want to drive. Lose flexibility and time.
ℹ Our take: Tumpak Sewu is genuinely Indonesia's best waterfall. But it's 5-6 hours from Banyuwangi any way you slice it. If it's a must-see, start from Malang (1.5h drive). Alternatively, add a 5th day to your Banyuwangi trip and drive there.
